GIMP:
Chapter 4: Drawing
PART
1: READ Chapter 4 through page 139 in the GIMP book, then:
- Answer
all questions below, briefly but completely.
- Change
the color of the answer to BLUE.
- Copy this information and paste
in a new post in your DIGITAL GRAPHICS blog.
1.
In
the NEW IMAGE dialog box, how can you begin with a TRANSPARENT image rather
than an image filled with the background color? Expand the Advance Options tab and choose
“fill with.”
|
2.
What
is the COMMENT box in the NEW IMAGE dialog box for? Name, Copyright or information about the
drawing. It can be left blank also.
|
3.
When
you draw new objects in GIMP, why is it advisable to create them on a new
layer? In
case you want to make changes later. Examples: Move parts, duplicate images
or change background.
|
4.
Briefly
describe these properties found in the NEW LAYER box:
·
Layer
Name: Name
chosen by you to describe what is in that specific layer, making it easier
when working with multiple layers.
·
Width
and Height: Defaults
the size of the image.
·
Layer Fill Type: Here you are able to decide if you want the
layer to start out transparent. Transparent is default.
|
5.
Briefly
describe the purpose of the following drawing tool options:
·
Mode:
Combining layers;
how to combine pixels.
·
Opacity:
Makes the
tool’s line more transparent, 0-100.
·
Scale:
Allows you to
make the brush bigger or smaller.
·
Fade
out: After a
specific distance, makes the line fade out.
·
Jitter:
Randomness,
used sometimes to make a drawing appear more natural.
·
Incremental: If opacity is less than 100%, it makes the line more
darker.
·
Use
color from gradient: This tool doesn’t use the current foreground color, it
uses the gradient instead.

6.
What
is a graphics tablet and what is
used for? Can tablets be used with GIMP? The graphics tablet is used by artists because they can
control shapes and lines easier with a stylus. It can allow them to make
lines more smooth. They are also sensitive to pressure. Yes it can be used
with GIMP, but some have found that it can be difficult for the operating
system to see the drawing-tablet information that GIMP needs.
|
Drawing Tools: Briefly describe what each of these drawing
tools is used for:
|
1. Pencil: This tool allows you to draw lines that have
sharp edges.
|
2. Brush: Line drawing as well, give you the ability
to control the shape and width of the line.
|
3. Airbrush: Time sensitive, draws fuzzy edges until the
the brush is held in one spot until it become opaque.
|
4. Ink Pen: Most complex, it reacts to your speed, giving off “ink” like a real pen would,
this way the line varies.
|
5. Eraser: Depending on transparency, the eraser can
erase the transparent layer, erase the opaque layer or paint the current
background color.
|
6. Rectangle Select: To drag out a
selection in an image.
|
7. Lasso: AKA, Free Select. It allows you to draw
freehand any shape.
|
8. Bucket Fill: Used with fillings that are more
complicated, it has more tool options for example, FG or BG or pattern.
|
9. Blend: AKA, The Gradient. Another way to fill
areas. This has a gradient chooser as well as opacity, mode.
